But since there are too many folks posting vague and not-so-vague Harry Potter spoilers without lj-cuts, I don't want to read my standard people-only list (I still don't have time right now to go back to reading communities with regularity).

So here's my plan, which is still somewhat unfair to nice folks who don't post spoilers without cuts, but it's the best thing I can come up with: I'm going to make a filter of people who either aren't reading Harry Potter or can assure me that they won't post anything about it without a cut. This includes, "omg it made me have this emotion" posts or anything else even hinting at the book. If you don't want to take the time to put stuff behind a cut, that's fine, it's your journal, but I don't want to read anything you say for at least a few weeks.

Therefore, anyone who does want me to read their journal and promises to put stuff behind cuts or not be posting about the book at all, please comment here and I'll add you to a filter and continue to read you regularly (except when Corran and I go off to California for a few days some time in the next couple of weeks).

Sorry to make nice people jump through hoops...

Oh, and the four people who already commented in my last post about this issue ([info]naughty_panda, [info]deadrelatives, [info]evisceria78, and [info]annieeats) don't have to comment here, you're already on the filter. Thanks. :)

And if anyone is cranky about it and wants to defriend me over it, be my guest, because I'll be quite content to defriend back. Spoilers posted without cuts suck, plain and simple. I don't do it to anyone else, even on old series/movies or documentaries, I don't want it done to me.

I just finished reading it, and I don't intend to discuss anything about it in my own journal. If for some reason I change my mind, I will cut tag it and label it clearly as discussion about HP.

Well, I'm not reading it, so I doubt you'll hear spoilers from me ;)

Oooh, California! Lucky! Hope you two have fun!

The trip is to shop at IKEA...fun would be an extra, right now I'm just hoping for it to not be hellish, what with my food limitations, the ick of sitting in a car with giant belly for that long, and the need to probably rent a van and my subsequent fear of getting killed by air-freshener again...

We'd love to do a fun trip but we just don't have the time or money at the moment. :/

My HP post is behind a cut tag.

I didn't read my flist yesterday until I finished reading the book, because I knew that someone was going to post spoilers without a cut tag. Which of course, they did.

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 00:38:55 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, LJ seems rife with the spoilers. Sooooo annoying...sooooo unnecessary. :/

I read the first one after the movie... I might read the rest some day...

July 18 2005, 00:39:29 UTC 6 years ago

They're decent mind-candy. I'll read this one eventually. I'm just not putting other important things on hold to rush to read it just because people will post spoilers.

I just finished book 5 just before 6 came out. I doubt I'll be reading it any time soon, and I don't plan to discuss it any farther than "I got my copy and am starting to read it."

I generally only post about books that make a serious impact on me. HP is fluff. Fun fluff, but not worth posting on.

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 00:40:14 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, I doubt I'd post on it much myself. It's fun mind-candy, not a life-changing thing for me. I get that it's way important to some folks, and that's cool too, so long as they're respectful of others about it.

July 17 2005, 19:32:49 UTC 6 years ago

Please add me, all my stuff is behind cut tags, I promise - I stopped my friend from telling me about the fourth movie and I know the freakin' plot.

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 00:41:03 UTC 6 years ago

You're added. :) And yeah, I'd rather not hear about the movies either before they come out. Sometimes half the fun is in forgetting things and only remembering them when you see the film, or in seeing what the film does differently.

I'm not reading Harry Potter currently, and probably have no intention of getting the new book anytime soon (although I would use cuts if I did) so you're safe with me!

My "to read" pile is so large if I even think about buying another book Hubb will probably shoot me.

lol

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 00:41:58 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, I have a ridiculous stack of stuff to read and no time to read it, especially since I've been in writing mode for a year and a half almost solid, and that precludes me from reading much else. My own characters start reacting to the plots in other books and it can get confusing in my insane brain...

[info]elephant_luv

July 17 2005, 19:52:31 UTC 6 years ago

I really can't stand HP. I read all the books when I was in 7th grade- about 6 years ago. Since then, I have no interest in it. lol. So I won't ruin a thing.

Rest assured that I will not spoil you on Harry Potter...as I have absolutely no interest in anything even remotely related to Harry Potter (nor in Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or any of the other contemporary adventure/fantasy serial phenomena that appear to turn otherwise rational adults into obsessive nerds for some mind-boggling reason that completely escapes me).

And, yes, I realize that was an incredibly wordy and awkward run-on sentence.

*g*

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 00:44:16 UTC 6 years ago

Oh, I'm an obsessive nerdgirl about LotR. I learned to read at the age of 3.5 on The Hobbit. Those books have deep and important personal meaning for me.

I just hardly require my friends to care about them, and even with things like LotR I put in spoiler space or LJ-cuts. Better safe than sorry. :)

And hey, grammar is fairly optional in casual emails and posts, IMO. :D Heck, I rarely even bother to spell-check comments.

it's SO funny, in scrolling through my friends list just now, i was JUST thinking about 'sheesh, can't anyone talk about anything BUT harry potter'?

so SO count me in. never touched any of the books, never glanced at the movies.

We'll get ours from Australia when my in-laws come up in the fall for the baby's arrival. Depending on how far in advance they arrive, I'll either read it then or not get to it for some time, I expect. My little girl is ever so slightly more important. ;)

July 17 2005, 23:09:49 UTC 6 years ago

I haven't read it yet as I had to finish another book first, but when I have read it I will be posting any comments behind a cut tag unlike the inconsiderate idiots who spoilered me last night.

Oh wow, you're right! I meant to notice but forgot! Earlier on I looked at that thing every day because I felt like each day she lived was a triumph, but now I'm way more relaxed because I can feel the movement all the time and that's my main reassurance.

I did know we clicked over to 26 weeks today, which means one week to go until third trimester! :)

For reference: my only interest in Harry Potter is in the purely Fahrenheit 451 sense. Hopefully extending the same courtesy to JK Rowling, long may she rot in a suppurating pit of pestilential poxes for inflicting such rancid tripe on the world.

Lol, what a smart idea! Seriously...I'm just skimming through some of my friend's posts...I have no interest in having the book spoiled...it ticks me off. So, you can rest assured I won't be doing any of that :)

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 13:11:34 UTC 6 years ago

It doesn't feel like a smart idea...it feels like I'm forcing all of the people who can behave to jump through an extra hoop just because some people suck. :/

But it's better than hiding in a corner, I suppose.

I'll add you to the filter for when I read flist tonight. Thanks!

[info]mythicsagecat

July 18 2005, 07:12:41 UTC 6 years ago

Hey!

To all those bashing the Harry Potter books: I don't obsess about them, but I like the books, I have bought the latest, and I am reading it (it may take me a while because I have a life), and so far I am enjoying it. No one will be forcing you to read it.

That said; that's about all I will say about it without putting up an lj-cut. Posting spoilers without cuts and warnings is very rude. [info]kimberlychapman's request is an entirely reasonable one.

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 13:12:37 UTC 6 years ago

Re: Hey!

The books seem to inspire either love or hatred in most people. I suppose that's overall a testament to them...it's better to be hated than to be boring. :)

But thanks for the support, and I'll add you to the filter for when I read flist tonight.

[info]littlela17

July 18 2005, 09:01:08 UTC 6 years ago

I won't be reading it for another few weeks. SHould I choose to comment I promise to be very clear in my cut that I am posting a spoiler.

Besides, the book has been partially ruined for me thanks to no cutting meanines.

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 13:13:25 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, unlike with Without a Trace, I'm not having to explain to anyone about the spoiler posts this time because it seems like everyone's seen it.

I'll add you to the list for when I read flist tonight. :)

[info]kari_marie

July 18 2005, 10:01:40 UTC 6 years ago

Here's the same thing I've been telling everyone else: Everyone dies at the end and there's no 7th book--it was all a lie.

KIDDING!! I'M KIDDING!!!

I won't ever spoil you, because, believe it or not, I've never actually read all of any of the HP books. I've never been able to get into them, nor the FOTR books. I know, bad me. I just don't like fantasy.

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 13:16:07 UTC 6 years ago

I knew you were kidding and I figured someone would say something like that. :) Actually, for now I'm just glad some nasty person hasn't decided to stroll along and post a spoiler just to be a shithead about it.

And there's nothing wrong with not reading anything...nobody should feel forced to by any means. That's half the problem I'm having...I like the HP books okay but not enough to throw aside everything else I need to do in order to devour them to avoid spoilers. There's a sense that either you're a "real fan" and must read it within 24 hours, or you deserve spoilers. That sucks.

Anyway, I'll add you to the filter for tonight's flist reading. :)

July 18 2005, 11:12:16 UTC 6 years ago

I read Harry Potter, but I probably won't have the 6th book for a little bit. I am waiting for someone else in my family to buy it :-P
Oh, and I probably won't post anything at all about it when I read it, but if for some reason I do, I'll definitely cut it.

It's funny, I didn't even think about the fact that Potter-mania would be all over LJ, but here it is :-P

[info]kimberlychapman

July 18 2005, 13:17:05 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, we're waiting for the Queen's English copy to come to us via my in-laws in Australia, and they won't be here until the fall.

I'll add you to the filter for when I read flist tonight. :)
